Dead Right is a dark farce about cancer, suicide pacts, life fulfillment, relationships, potato chips and ladders.
Suzanna writes commercials for a living and the work is killing her soul. She quits her job to write a play about a woman who quits her job to write a play. Her insensitive and insecure psychotherapist husband Michael resists his wife’s decision, worried about how it’ll affect this nicely settled life.
Their standoff gets sidelined when Suzanna’s crusading mother Helena, newly diagnosed with cancer, announces she wants to end it all to avoid her own suffering and being a burden on her family. Her devoted husband Bud, devastated by the prospect of life without Helena, suggests that they die together. Suzanna and Michael’s frantic attempts to prevent the worst leads to a resolution where the death toll is unexpected.
Whoever’s left standing may or may not live happily ever after.
Written by Kate Barris & David Schatzky, directed by Briane Nasimok and starring Chris Gibbs, Janelle Hutchison, Allan Price and Kristi Woods, Dead Right asks the question “Who’s right about whose rights?” with cheekiness, humour and of course potato chips and a ladder.
